The first full-length translation in English of an essential work of postmodernism.The publication of "Simulacra et Simulation" in 1981 marked Jean Baudrillard's first important step toward theorizing the postmodern. Moving away from the Marxist/Freudian approaches that had concerned him earlier, Baudrillard developed in this book a theory of contemporary culture that relies on displacing economic notions of cultural production with notions of cultural expenditure.Baudrillard uses the concepts of the simulacra - the copy without an original - and simulation. These terms are crucial to an understanding of the postmodern, to the extent that they address the concept of mass reproduction and reproduceability that characterizes our electronic media culture.Baudrillard's book represents a unique and original effort to rethink cultural theory from the perspective of a new concept of cultural materialism, one that radically redefines postmodern formulations of the body.

Einem Millionenpublikum ist dieses Buch bekannt, zumindestens unbewusst. Man erinnere sich an den Anfang von "Matrix". Es klopft an der Tür, Neo öffnet, ein paar Freaks fragen ihn, ob er die Ware hat, Neo geht an sein Bücherregal, nimmt ein Buch und öffnet es. In diesem Buch befinden sich keine Seiten sondern die Ware, ein paar Disketten.Dieses Buch ist Baudrillards "Simulation and Simulacra", eine der wohl abgefahrensten Essaysammlungen überhaupt. Die Frage nach dem Sinn dieser Aufsätze ist nicht beantwortbar. Vielleicht gibt es auch gar keinen. Eine, nenne wir es mal Grundkonstante, durchzieht das gesamte Werk des postmodernen Denkers.Die Realität gibt es nicht mehr. Wir leben in einer Simulation, welche die Tatsache verdecken soll, dass die Realität längst verschwunden und in eine Hyperrealität übergegangen ist. Ein Beispiel: Disneyland ist ganz offensichtlich nicht real. Jeder weiß, dass Mickey, Donald & Co. nur Fiktion sind. Durch diesen offensichtlich künstlichen Charackter simuliert Disneyland aber, dass die Welt außerhalb eine reale sei. Disneyland hat daher die Funktion zu verbergen, dass es schon längst überhaupt keine Realität mehr gibt.Verstanden? Nicht? Gut, alles andere wäre auch seltsam.Eine weitere Konstante Baudrillards ist seine Medienkritik. Die Medien, permanente Produzenten von Zeichen, machen einen Zugang zur "Realität" unmöglich.Beispiel: während des Golfkrieges setzten sich Journalisten vor den Fernseher, schauten CNN, und schrieben anhand dieser Informationen ihre Artikel. Sie benutzten also produzierte Zeichen um weitere Zeichen zu produzieren, die den Anspruch erheben, die "Realität" abzubilden. Nach Baudrillaard ist dies, wegen der milliardenfachen Masse an Zeichen, die täglich produziert werden, unmöglich geworden. Der freie Zugang zu Informationen ist für ihn also nicht der Garant zum Erkennen der Wahrheit, sondern ein Grund für das Verschwinden der Realität. In seinem Essay "The Gulf War did not take place" beschäftigt er sich näher mit dieser Thematik.Also, Baudrillards Schaffen ist Gehirnjogging a la bonheur. Es ist aber nicht nur, wie ihm oftmals vorgeworfen wird, intellektuelle Selbstbefriedigung eines abgefahrenen Spinners. Seine Kritik der Gesellschaft, so wie sie heute erscheint, ist bestechend. Der Vorwurf, dass er ja gar kein alternatives Modell vorstellt, ist korrekt. Seine Arbeit beschränkt sich einzig und allein auf die Kritik. Doch das haben Adorno & Co auch schon getan und sind nicht (na ja, meistens zumindest) als Spinner abgetan worden.Um Baudrilalrds Denken verständlich zu machen, wurde die Hyperrealität oftmals mit der Matrix gleichgesetzt. Dies ist nur bedingt korrekt, da es außerhalb der Matrix ja eine, wenn auch unschöne, Realität gibt. Diese kann man erkennen, wenn man die rote Pille schluckt. In Baudrillards Welt hat der Mensch diese Möglichkeit nicht. Es gibt keine Wahl zwischen roter und blauer Pille, da es keine Realität gibt.
This book is not about coming up with the truth, or with understanding how things really work, or anything like that. It's about pointing out that the emperor is not only naked but standing on his head and juggling. Baudrillard is eternally fun as long as you don't take him too seriously. Let his insanity wash over you like a flood and turn off your reality filters for a while. Let him ask all the questions P. K. Dick does, only in greater and weirder detail. What is real? What is a commodity? Why are some things valuable? Things have no value outside of their relationship to other things... and sometimes, relationships and ideas are the only real commodity, hollow fronts for a system with no foundation in the real world at all. Could you have science without testing things against what is real? Can you simply study unreal things forever, producing paper after paper, all logically consistent but studying something that ultimately doesn't exist?All of Baudrillard since he stopped his Marxist tirade has been a wildly funny and insightful parade of wrong ideas. Enjoy it, be altered by it, and then go back to your regularly scheduled Nike shoe purchase.
I'm glad to see at least one other netizen saw the correlation between Baudrillard's Simulacra & Simulation and THE MATRIX. Did you also notice that the book Neo picked up was not a book at all, but a container for bootleg disks. So the book itself was an illusion for what it 'really was - a safe. Meanings inside of meanings. Unfortuately, the book is only 156 pages while the book in the movie was around 300. And the chapter on Nihilism is at the end, while in the movie it is at the beginning. Perhaps the person checking continuity let these subtle details slip by. For all those who have not experienced the Matrix. I highly, highly recommend it. Please don't see it's baseness, but enjoy the artisic nuances. Peace. DougD.
What is The Matrix? Simulation and Simulacra A place where nothing is real, where everything is a simulation. An overt notion in both Gnostic thought and the motion picture 'The Matrix', a strange thread of theory runs through Nag Hammadi and Essene manuscripts, the Gnostic story of Genesis, Philip K. Dick's quest for the messiah in Valis-- all flowering from a bed of Babylonian mysteries of space, time and reality as past down thru secret societies and brotherhoods with snakes as their mascots. So is it any wonder that when Matrix messiah Neo goes to retrieve a disk of hacked code hidden in a book, that very book is none other then 'Simulacra and Simulation'? I think not. Start with the Gnostic story of genesis, substitute the words 'material wisdom' with 'artificial intelligence', have a yogi tea with PKD's 'Valis', watch 'The Matrix' then take on 'Simulacra and Simulation' then you too may become convinced that 'Rome never died'. Just follow the white rabbit...
